A “global 4G gateway” is only global if its band support overlaps with the carriers you plan to use.
Many buyers see “supports 4G LTE” in a datasheet and assume the device can be deployed anywhere. LTE is not one worldwide lane. Each country, and often each carrier inside that country, uses a different mix of LTE frequency bands.
For industrial projects, a wrong choice can affect an entire rollout. A gateway that works with one carrier may register poorly, lose coverage stability or fail to attach when the deployment changes market or SIM provider.

Why is “supports 4G” not enough?
LTE is the technology family. LTE bands are the local operating lanes.
A carrier may use B3 and B40 in one country, while another carrier uses B7, B20 or B28. Some regions rely on TDD bands such as B38, B40 and B41. Others use more FDD bands such as B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20 and B28.
The useful buying question is: does this product support the bands used by the carrier for this deployment?
If the answer is no, the site may face four risks:
- Registration risk: the device may not attach to the LTE network.
- Coverage risk: the device may only use a weak or secondary band.
- Throughput risk: the device may connect but underperform.
- Deployment risk: one hardware variant may not fit every target country.
Industrial gateways may be installed inside control cabinets, pump stations, agriculture sites, cold-chain warehouses or remote monitoring boxes. Replacing them after deployment is expensive, so LTE band planning should happen before purchase.
What LTE bands do the three gateways support?
Y201-G, Y212-G and Y212-GWR share this documented LTE band baseline:
- FDD LTE: B1 / B3 / B5 / B8.
- TDD LTE: B34 / B38 / B39 / B40 / B41.
The current Y212-G specification also lists WCDMA, CDMA2000 and GSM fallback. Y201-G is LTE-only. Confirm fallback requirements and the final Y212-GWR variant before rollout.
How should buyers check South Asia and Southeast Asia?
South Asia and Southeast Asia often use mixed FDD and TDD profiles. India commonly requires attention to B3, B5, B40 and B41, with B1 and B8 appearing in some deployment profiles. Pakistan planning commonly involves B3, B8 and B40, with operator-specific overlap sometimes extending to B1 or B7.
Indonesia commonly uses B1, B3, B8, B40 and B41. Singapore may involve B1, B3, B7, B8, B38, B40 and B41, depending on the operator. Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Laos also show mixed band environments in which B7, B28 or B41 may matter for a specific carrier.
Confirm the operator early. A gateway validated in one Southeast Asian country is not automatically a fit for the next country or carrier.
How should buyers check the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa?
Markets such as Iraq, Syria, Algeria, Ethiopia and Uzbekistan may involve B3, B7, B8, B20, B28 and B40. Where B7, B20 or B28 is required, compare the operator profile carefully because those bands are outside the shared LTE baseline listed above.
For remote pumping stations, environmental monitoring systems, cold-chain storage sites and off-grid agriculture assets, local carrier coverage matters as much as the gateway specification.
How should buyers check Latin America?
Brazil commonly includes B3, B7 and B38 in reference planning, depending on the carrier. Venezuela may involve B3, B7, B8, B28 and B40. Argentina commonly involves B4, B7, B28 and B40. Other South American operator profiles may include B2, B3, B4, B7, B13, B17, B28 and B38.
For a multi-country rollout, build a country-and-carrier table before procurement. Record the planned SIM provider, required bands, installation environment, expected data volume and backup-connectivity needs.
How should buyers check Europe, Japan and South Korea?
Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Ukraine and Italy commonly involve bands such as B3, B7, B8, B20, B28, B32, B38 and B40. A gateway may cover one operator’s core LTE bands while missing another band used for coverage or capacity.
Japan is highly carrier-specific. NTT DoCoMo, SoftBank and KDDI use different combinations that may include B1, B3, B8, B11, B18, B19, B21, B26, B28 and B41. South Korea also varies across SKT, KT and LG U+. Confirm the exact operator and product variant before procurement.
What do regional module labels mean?
Labels such as CE, E, J, A or AU are normally manufacturer-side shorthand for regional module variants. They are not universal telecom standards. Use a label to narrow a shortlist, then compare the exact band list with the target carrier.

What seven checks should happen before an order?
- List every deployment country. Include likely expansion markets as well as the pilot country.
- List the preferred carrier in each country. If the carrier is undecided, mark the hardware selection as provisional.

- Assess the data volume. Simple telemetry may only need Cat.1; higher data rates may justify Cat.4.

What are the common industrial LTE gateway selection mistakes?
Buying only by the phrase “supports 4G”
A regional band mismatch can prevent reliable registration. Compare the exact gateway and carrier bands before purchase.
Assuming one country means one band plan
Operators inside one country may use different band combinations. Validate by carrier and planned SIM rather than country alone.
Treating Japan, China or the United States as simple markets
These markets can be highly carrier-specific. A broad label such as “Asia” or “North America” is not enough.
Overspecifying Cat.4 for simple meter reading
If a device sends a small packet every few minutes or every hour, Cat.1 may be sufficient. Match the LTE category to the real data volume.
Choosing a serial gateway when the cabinet needs routing
If the site needs Ethernet devices, Wi-Fi maintenance or WAN backup, define that topology before choosing the gateway.
